If your eight month-old still cries when trying to fall asleep on his or her own, sleep training might be the solution.

Parents using this method often employ a pre-bedtime routine that entails cuddling, saying goodnight and leaving the room. Parents using this approach may also employ bedtime fading techniques by gradually shifting the time of their desired sleeptime.

Cry It Out

The cry it out method, also known as the extinction method, is an increasingly popular approach to sleep training, in which parents allow their baby or toddler to cry as they learn how to fall asleep independently. While some experts view this technique negatively, its extreme form shouldn’t pose any significant health or safety risks and may help many babies learn how to fall asleep more quickly.

The controlled crying method, an alternative to Cry It Out, allows parents to stay with their child while they learn to fall asleep but leave after a certain interval. This prevents a baby or toddler from becoming dependent upon comfort measures like rocking or feeding which may make it more difficult for them to sleep without them around.

Experts often advocate starting small when it comes to sleep training a newborn. Five minute increments should suffice when starting off; this method has become one of the more popular methods used with older babies too if they’re ready to learn to fall asleep independently.

No matter which approach a family chooses for sleep training, consistency is key. Some consultants suggest parents implement similar approaches at bedtime and nap time so their little ones can develop a reliable schedule.

Experts often advise parents using the Cry It Out method to refrain from swaddling their baby or toddler at night, since this can make it more difficult for them to find a safe position to sleep in. Furthermore, sending mixed messages such as allowing baby/toddler to cry for short periods but then immediately picking them back up could confuse and frustrate the infant or toddler further.

Experts advise that if a baby or toddler remains reluctant to sleep on their own, even after trying the Cry It Out method several nights, then gentler approaches like Check-and-Console or The Chair Method might be more suitable.

Ferber Method

Ferber Method Sleep Training Technique has become increasingly popular, appearing in various television shows and movies. For best results, introduce this sleep training method as early as possible with strong support structures in place to reduce any emotional strain or anxiety that your child might encounter during this process. A support network will also help ensure consistency when adhering to your plan.

The Ferber method is similar to Cry It Out but differs in that parents can check on their children at predetermined intervals. On your first night using the Ferber Method, if your child cries or calls out after you put them down to sleep, wait three minutes before returning and eventually extend that interval so your child has 10 minutes of crying time before checking back with them.

This method works best for babies at least six months old, as they will likely have learned how to self-soothe by then and are unlikely to wake in the middle of the night due to external factors like being sick. However, no sleep training methods are 100% safe; there is always the potential risk that any method might harm your child before reaching this age.

Whitney Schutzbank, MD of MassGeneral Hospital for Children cautions that this approach may disrupt your baby’s natural sleep patterns and require longer than other methods to produce results. She notes that this method differs from evolutionary norms by encouraging infants to fall asleep with caregivers present.

Roban emphasizes the importance of consistency when it comes to sleep training: any method can fail without enough support from everyone involved, so it is best to begin this method with an all-inclusive team who are all on board and follow it precisely.” It is also essential to remember that sleep training doesn’t just involve getting your child asleep; rather it involves teaching them self-soothing skills which will eventually result in improved restful nights as they build healthy sleeping habits for life.

The Chair Method

This gentler sleep training method may be especially beneficial for babies who become distressed when left to their own devices to sleep or waken throughout the night. Sitting next to their crib or bed allows you to reassure and pacify them as needed; patting or shushing may also help settle them if needed; eventually as time progresses your chair will move farther from it until eventually leaving altogether by bedtime.

This can be a difficult process that may take weeks to accomplish successfully, yet most parents find that their baby quickly learns to self-soothe with this method if they remain consistent and patient.

As soon as your child falls asleep, place the chair directly beside their bed or crib and use verbal reassurance, stroke their head or give bum pats as ways of comforting them. However, avoid picking them up because this tends to “restart” their sleep cycle.

On day three, slowly move your chair away from the bed or crib. By night four, however, you should be entirely out of the room at bedtime while also continuing to reassure the child verbally and through pats until they fall asleep.

Sleep training by rocking may be the gentlest approach and especially helpful if your baby cries when left to cry on its own. However, this method may not work if your child suffers from severe separation anxiety.

As part of the Chair Method, it’s crucial to recognize your child’s sleep cues so you can put them down when they’re tired and ensure they don’t become overtired, which could make it harder for them to fall or stay asleep – for instance rubbing their eyes or yawning, becoming cranky, etc. Additionally, waiting until after their usual bath and mealtime before trying to put your child down for bed may help ensure a more successful result.

The Check-and-Console Method

The Check-and-Console method (sometimes referred to as The Sleep Lady Shuffle or Camping Out ) is similar to Ferber in that you place your baby down awake while remaining nearby, sitting in a chair nearby, to provide soothing at intervals – including patting intermittently, verbally reassuring, or shush them as necessary. Every few nights you move farther away until eventually your chair can no longer lull them to sleep on its own at bedtime. While some caregivers use this alone, others combine it with CIO or Ferber method for best results.

No matter which sleep training method you opt for, consistency should always be your goal. Select an evening time that works for your family and stick with it. Although there may be difficult nights along the way, persevering will pay off in the end!

Some gentle methods are designed to help wean your baby off being rocked or held to sleep at naptime and bedtime, teaching them self-soothing strategies in the form of sleep training techniques which involve placing them down when they’re sleepy but awake – an opportunity they won’t get by being rocked to sleep first or held close in your arms.

As a general guideline, most babies should begin sleeping training between four and six months old when their sleep cycles have established themselves and they’re ready to learn to self soothe themselves. Of course, some infants may be ready sooner or later and so always speak to your pediatrician prior to beginning sleep training plans.

Keep in mind that no single sleep training method works for every child and you may need to test various ones before finding one that’s the right fit for yours. Some parents find consulting a sleep specialist or pediatrician before beginning, while others prefer reading up on various methods before making their decision based on what fits best with their family lifestyle and personality. Whatever route you take, be consistent in applying it – remember, your baby needs consistency in developing new sleep habits!https://www.youtube.com/embed/KdyvnSZD3aM

Many babies are natural sleepers; however, even the best-rested infants can develop sleep issues as they grow.
